THE NEW

ARCHBISHOP OF PARIS

THE Pope has appointed Cardinal Suhard, Archbishop of Rheims, to the Archbishopric of Paris in succession to Cardinal Verdier, who died on April 9. The so prompt filling of this important See is taken in Paris as a special mark of the Pope's benevolence to France.

Cardinal Suhard, who was created Cardinal Priest in 1935, has been Archbishop of Rheims since 1930. He was consecrated Bishop of Bayeux in 1928. Like the great Cardinal whom he succeeds, he is an excellent organiser and a great Frenchman, and his most recent pastoral on France's Christian vocation attracted much attention in Rome.

The new Archbishop of Paris is Doctor of Law of Oxford, honoris eastsa, a distinction that was conferred on him in 1936, and for which he visited that city.

Other appointments in the French Church were announced at the same time. Mgr. Rogues, Archbishop of Aix en Provence, becomes Archbishop of Rennes; Mgr. Dubois de Villetabel, Bishop of Nancy, becomes Archbishop of Aix; Mgr. Motissaron. Bishop of Cahors, becomes ArchhisbOp of ALbl.
