The Abbess of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Walburga in Eichstadt, Bavaria, Mother Domina Benedicta, who had died at the age of 76, saved her town—and her abbey—at the end of the war by disobeying Nazi orders and heading a delegation of citizens to surrender Eichstadt to the American troops.
