H.M.V. AND DECCA RECORDS The Christmas Lists

The issues of the H.M.V. are so extensive for December that I can only call attention to some of the main features.
The 5th Symphony of Beethoven has often fallen into a hackneyed condition if one dare breathe the word, yet good performances are rare; the usual faults are want of precision and " muddy " colouring. On DB 3328-31 it is clear that Furtwangler and the Berlin Philharmonic have taken infinite pains to provide a worthy rendering of this immortal music, and the only thing I can offer by way of criticism is a sigh of profound satisfaction. The Album is No. 294.
Toscanini adds to his triumphs by a recording of the Pastoral Symphony of Beethoven (No. 6) with the B.B.C. Symphony Orchestra (Album 295). He combines the art of teaching an orchestra exactly what he wants, and at the same time evoking all the most vital musicianship of the orchestra; the B.B.C. Gin well be proud of what its orchestra is now capable of doing, nor must we forget the untiring work of Sir Adrian Boult or how much his own genius has contributed to the result. Whatever former recordings there have been of this symphony—and they have been many and distinguished—no musician can neglect the latest, DB 3333-7. Myra Hess plays the Schumann Concerto in A minor—another lovely set of records— and Sclurabel the Moments Musicaux of Schubert (Op. 94). Ernest Lough, who in
1922 Produced one of the greatest gram°,
phone sensations when, as a boy, ho sang " Hear my prayer," has now developed a rich baritone voice, and may be heard in " The Holy Child " and " Serenade" (Schubert), B 8672, a three-shilling record.
Among the vocalists we have Marta Fuchs in the Erl King, Joan Cross in various solos from La Boheme; and Flagstad in Bridge's well-known "Love went ariding." It needs a big flexible voice to do this song justice and all will be interested in this record who know and love the song.
Decca
The main item among Decca's recording is one of Sir Henry Wood and the Queen's Hall Orchestra in Bruckner's Overture in G minor; also the Dylan Prelude of Joseph Holbrooke. The latter might be defined as belonging to the period of Elgar; it is not modern in the sense that Walton is modern. Much of Holbrooke's operatic work is based on texts by Lord Howard de Walden, gleaned from Welsh folk lore sources. The conductor is Clarence Raybould.
Decca has now published a catalogue of its "Permanent Music "; a 40-page volume which displays the wide novel field that Decca has consistently explored for the last few years. The results are of very definite value to the cause of music. A copy of the catalogue can be sent to anyone on request (60, City Road, E.C.).
