Be 'party to politics'

THE CATHOLIC Church should not distance itself front politics, but should ensure that potties are as much bound by its moral teachings as any other sphere of life.

In close accord with Cardinal Hume's appeal at the National Conference of Priests for closer Church involvement in community and political affairs, Canon Francis Ripley, parish priest of St Oswald's, Ashton in Makerfield said in a homily to Catholic Trade Unionists in Blackpool that anyone who says religion should separate itself front politics "understands neither religion nor politics"

Canon Ripley also told his congregation that trade unions are essentially Christian and should therefore be "absolutely dominated, saturated and directed by the Christ who is the Wisdom of God".

When misunderstandings arise between workers and their employers, he continued, they should he settled by "willingness to listen and dialogue", and not by "violence, harsh words and antagonkrn".
