WESLEY BOYD, Director of News, Radio Telefis Eireann, feels I was less than fair to say BBC TV's coverage of the Doolin drowning tragedy was more accurate than theirs, when, in fact, it was RTE journalists who supplied the information to BBC. I wouldn't want to make a song and dance about it but the fact is the earlier BBC bulletin was more accurate than the later RTE one.
I now know RTE were trying desperately to sort out conflicting and subsequent messages and I hold no journalist at fault. Perhaps more ruthless editing at base might have meant less colour but more accuracy. Given the Lisdoonvarna Music Festival crowds, I recognise what a mammoth and delicate task it was for RTE's correspondents.
