Beware of misguided enthusiasts

HOW TO BE A VOLUNTEER
ELEVEN South American republics have quickly applied for scholarships, offered by the Holy See, to train men to become "Papal Volunteers".
These men and women will be prepared to train other Catholics in their respective countries to become . worthy leaders in Catholic Action. Foreign nationals will be also recruited for this new force of "Volunteers".
This is the Holy See's practical gesture made to enlist the aid of layfolk in re Christianising priest-starved Latin America. Among these warmly supporting the scheme arc the bishops of Canada and the United States.
WARNING
But Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of Boston, has sounded a warning. He writes: "In many instances lay volunteers go to distant places with an abundance of goodwill, for a very short period of time and instead of training native leaders to take their places after they depart, they give their services directly to children and others who give no evidence of future leadership as priests, Religious or lay apostles".
To avoid repeating the mistake, the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, and its representatives, will carefully choose candidates who must clearly understand what their mission is to be as "Papal Volunteers".
Scholarships have also been awarded by the Pontifical Commission to enable South Americans to study for the priesthood. These are: 400 for major seminarians from poor districts; 90 will go to Central America, and 310 to South America.
Canadian and American bishops have offered 40 four-year scholarships to be held in Canadian seminaries and universities. Moreover, 52 scholarships have been established at various Roman universities for seminarians.
Raising the roof
Benedictine monks of Pluscardin have started work on raising to the proper level the roof of that part of the 13th century priory which is habitable. The work is being carried out under the direction of the Prior, Dom Norbert Cowin. The Priory, dedicated to Our Lady, St. John the Baptist and St. Andrew, was founded in 1230 and re-founded in 1948.
