Sir Stafford Cripps, Chancellor of the Exchequer, has agreed through the Treasury to unblock sterling to go abroad up to £50,000 as contributions from people in this country towards the cost of making the film Tire Divine Tragedy.
As announced on several previous occasions in this paper, this is to be an account of the life and work of
Our Lord. It will be directed by Abel Gance under the supervision of Georges de la Grandiere, who was responsible for the film Monsieur Vincent.
Baroness Ravensdalc, who has just seen M. la Grandiere, told me: "The total cost of the production will be in the neighbourhood of £500,000. and this will come from countries all over the world.
"The actor, a young French professor, has now been chosen to play the part of Christ but he, like the rest of the cast, will be anonymous.
" The actress who will take Our Lady's part has not yet been decided upon, contrary to a report which appeared in the National Press that an American actress had been given the role.
"All religious denominations — Christians, Jews, Moslems, are keenly interested and will contribute. Actors will be drawn from all creeds."
A public appeal is to be launched immediately under an executive and trustee council for the British fund, of which Lady Ravensdale is the appointee,
