Liverpool hospice to close

by Joanna Moorhead A HOSPICE run by the Sisters of Charity in Liverpool is to close because the nuns are unable to pay for essential repair work.
The hospice, St Vincent's in the Old Swan area of Liverpool, is to shut its doors in July. "We made the decision to close after a lot of thought and negotiating. Our facilities needed upgrading and we realised we just couldn't afford it," said Sr Kathleen, superior at the hospice.
About £1 million would have been needed to pay for the work, she said. "We considered all sorts of ways of raising the money, but decided in the end that it just wasn't going to be viable."
Sr Kathleen said the 60 residents at the hospice were being found places in other private nursing homes in the area. This was being done in consultation with them and their families, and she refuted entirely a charge from an official of the Association of Professional, Executive, Corporate and Clerical Staff that patients and staff were getting a raw deal.
The closure had been fully discussed with the relevant unions and all staff would get redundancy payments in accordance with regulations, said Sr Kathleen. The eight sisters at the hospice would be moved to convents elsewhere.
