Holy See back `in the black'

THE VATICAN closed its 1998 accounts marginally in the black, mainly thanks to earning 43 billion lire, about £15m, by playing the international stock market, according to the annual report by Archbishop Sergio Sebastiani, president of the Prefecture of Economic Affairs, writes Bruce Johnston in Rome.

In the last decade the Vatican posted a worrying series of annual losses, forcing it to dig deep into its pockets and sell property and securities.
