Church to `buy' debt

THE ITALIAN Church has launched an ambitious plan to reduce Third World debt by "buying" outstanding loans.

The Italian bishops, together with a collection of lay bodies and movements, aims to buy quotas of the foreign debt of developing countries from the Italian government.

The debt purchased will be invested in development and educational projects.
