English joke

From Mr John Kearney In reply to John Holland (Letter, Jan 9), I would point out that I was not defending the Latin Mass. It does not need defending. I was simply commenting on recent Vatican pronouncements on the subject.

As for English being adopted as the universal language, perhaps Mr Holland was pulling our legs. There certainly would be resistance from the Spanish, who have probably the most widely spoken language in the world, and the Italians, who see the Church as their very own.

Yours faithfully, JOHN KEARNEY Basingstoke, Hants
