Demon servers give Church workers the willies
By Josephine Siedlecka THE DAUNTING task of keeping the ghosts out of the machines is causing concern among Church workers.
Several parishes have stopped using internet service provider Demon in the last two years on account of the name.
One parish priest in Westminster, who did nut wish to be named, said: "We decided to change servers because a few people had made comments and we felt it was a hit unsuitable. It's a shame. because they are an excellent company and provide very good service. They told me the name was more or less drawn out of a hat — but in fact it does seem odd — their phone number includes 666."
Another priest from Oxford said he had decided to change his e-mail server because he felt it might offend.
"The students found it amusing but there were a few comments front older people who didn't see the juke."
It has even been reported that Bishop Thomas McMa hon of Brentwood has scrapped his Demon e-mail address because of the name, but a diocesan spokesman denied the rumours were true.
He said: "We are still with Demon. We are happy with the service. But for operational reasons we have changed the name to dicerseofbrentwoodorg — that's because we are getting an internet site."
The service provider confirmed it had lost "one or two" customers because of its title. But a spokesman said: "We have a strong brand name.and we have no intendon of changing it."
Fr Martin Foster, head of the bishops' committee for liturgy, has a Demon e-mail address.
He said: "I suppose the address does cause raised eyebrows once in a while but we find it helps people remember who we are.
"Demon provides a good: service and we have no plans to change at present. In the long term we may get a diocesan dot corn address — then we will autornatically be given a different name."
