Children of One God: A History of the Council of Christians and Jews by Marcus Braybrooke (Vallentine Mitchell, £9.50)
Graham Jenkins
TO MEMBERS of the council, this book will be a most helpful account of the origins and history of the movement which has held them enthralled ever since they joined it. To others it will be an eye opener, but regrettably there will be many Christians and Jews who will still not want to know in ease their prejudices are disturbed.
The author has written a factual account of the growth of the Council of Christians and Jews from its birth in 1941 up to the present. It is obviously meticulously researched, in great detail, and gives no allover golden picture. The teething troubles were very difficult, with opposition from some sources.
With the main inspiration behind the formation of CCJ proceeding with tenacity and goodwill, the council grew and prospered, especially as branches appeared up and down the country. These branches helped to spread the ideals and ideas of the CCJ.
Apart from its own persistent work, it is surprising how many other movements grew out of the CCJ, and whilst pursuing its task of reconciliation between Christians and Jews, it unconsciously drew many Christians closer together working for a common cause.
