Papal peace prize

The document by which Pope John established a peace prize foundation to be named after him was published this week in the Vatican official gazette. Pope John made the first endowment of the foundation with the money he received with the Balzan peace prize. The new prim will be awarded every three years.

According to Acta Apostolicae Sedis, the Vatican Secretary of State will head a four-man council which will award the prize. The Council members will be appointed by Pope Paul and will hold their posts for four years. To avoid conflict. the prize will be awarded in years when the Balzan foundation does not give a prize.
