Mayor of Darlington in 1928-29, County Councillor J. F. I. Smith, a well-known Catholic business man of Durham, has accepted the unanimous invitation of Durham City Council to become Mayor of Durham in the canting municipal year.

Councillor Smith will thus have the distinction of being elected mayor of two boroughs in the County of Durham. He is a native of Barnard Castle, and was twelve years on the Town Council at Darlington before leaving for Durham,
