CAUTIOUS but sincere. the Vatican welcome to Anglican priests seeking conversion came just before Faster. With Rome saying yes, all eyes are now on the Catholic hierarchy of England and Wales: they must deliver guidelines for the Anglican traditionalists to follow, and — equally important they must set the tone that will ensure a continuation of the ecumenical dialogue that has been half a century in the making.
Meanwhile, the faithful must approach one another without bitterness or recriminations. The Vatican has asked us to open our arms in a spirit of "pastoral solicitude" to those Anglicans who wish to come into our fold. We must remember to keep our hearts open also to those who remain within a Church facing its greatest challenge.
