ROMERO REMEMBERED . . . demonstrators in London last week

(above) protesting at the presence in the capital of Major Roberto D'Aubuisson, the man believed to have been responsible for the murder of Salvadoran Archbishop Oscar

Romero in 1980.

Major D'Aubuisson was in Britain for a conference organised by the Interparliamentary Union, an organisation linking Parliamentarians around the world. He is a founder member of El Salvador's ruling party, the Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA), the group linked to thousands of murders including that of Archbishop Romero, an outspoken champion of the poor.

• THE Salvadoran government this week agreed to accept the mediation of the Catholic Church in talks with left-wing rebels. Auxiliary Bishop Gregorio Rosa Chavez said in San Salvador that the Church had been called in as a "witness to the dialogue".
