In this image-making, trendsetting age of ours it is important that we see beyond the image to the ideal, and set the trend in the right direction. said Dom Hubert Van Zellar, 0.S.B., of Downside Abbey, when he spoke last week in Flint, North Wales.
Dom Van Zeller, author and sculptor, is Chaplain at Talacre Abbey. He was distributing prizes at the Blessed Richard Gwyn Bilateral School. He traced the development of modern thought and pointed out that the Phoenicians had seen through the image of education to the essence. They taught their people to think and search for truth. culture and peace. But, he added, it was only when Christianity arrived that people were taught to live. He went on to say that Christian education, with its "long-term view" of character formation, surpassed its secular counterpart which, he said. is aimed solely at the achievement of a degree.
