FOLLOWING an ancient route that Popes have taken for centuries, Pope Paul on Sunday to-ok possession of his cathedral church, the Basilica of St. John Lateran. He was escorted on the road by a team of police motor cycle outriders. Well over a !holism'd of
the Vatican Coum il Fathers attended the ceremony, in which the Pope received the keys of the basilica.
The ritual for taking possession of the cathedral church goes bark at lea,s1 to the eighth century. St. John Lateran, in the early cen
furies of the Church, was the residence of the Popes. It wa-s founded by the Emperor Constantine. Today it is in a working-class quarter of Rome.
The Pope's sermon on Sunday was a simple, pastoral address in which he expressed his love for Rome.
