Speaking at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, New Southgate, on Sunday, on the subject of " Reprisals," the Rev. Joseph Sunn answered those who were of the opinion that German arid Italian women and children should be bombed and machine gunned. Our whole case, he said. against Hitler and Mussolini is that they have returned to a state of primitive savagery, breaking faith, enslaving innocent nations, bombing and machine gunning women and children and using methods not only banned by all civilised peoples but condemned by Divine precept as evil and wicked. Were we to use methods such as these we ourselves would he guilty of a like barbarity and of Divine condemnation. Instead of condemning the Axis partners we would have to shake hands with them and call them pals in iniquity. There are some who would express their horror by setting up statues to the Axis dictators, not in military uniform, but with rings through their noses and painted with woad. Were we to imitate Axis methods. would we not also have to set up a statue to John Bull with ringed nose and painted body? No nation, by such methods, could preserve the honour of its people and save its soul.
