Simon Community was first with London 'soup run

I welcome the spotlight by Michael Duggan on the "skipperer" and "dosser" (March I), but there is an error that needs to be corrected, as it will only confuse the many Catholic Herald readers who have loyally supported our Teust since 1963.
St. Mungo Community Trust did not start the "soup run" in London. The first of its kind (0 opposed to those run bY religious groups) was founded by the Simon Community in
• 1966 and continued until 1969 as an activity of the London Simon Community when, at his own request, it was handed over to a Simon worker, Jim Horne. With a van provided by the Simon Community and a few friends, Jim started the St. Mungo Community, which does such good work in London.
Readers interested in the plight of the homeless and rootless may be interested to know that the Simon Community is organising a rally to spotlight the problems facing society's non-citizens on Palm Sunday in Trafalgar Square at 2.30 p.m. Speakers are not finalised, hut a number of other organisations caring for the homeless are being invited to take part.
A reunion to mark the 10th anniversary of the London Simon Community and the opening of the Trust's first house of hospitality St. Joseph's, in Malden Road, Kentish Town is being held on May I in St. Dorninie's Church Hall, Kentish Town, between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m.
