Respected Cardinal

DAVID HILL on Cardinal Merry del Val filled me with disgust. The allegations that he interfered with the election of Pope Pius XI and that he actively supported Mussolini are completely without foundation and out of keeping with all that we know of his character.

Of course Mr Hill is mainly intent on decrying the Cardinal because he supported Pope St Pius X in his condemnation of the modernists: Well we only have to look around the Church today to see the chaos being caused by the new breed of modernists who remain largely uncondemned.

But worst of all is the attack on Cardinal del Val's work for the youth in the Travtavern. This was well known during his life time and earned him the greatest possible respect.

My own grandmother, a nonCatholic often spoke of his marvellous work. The facts are there in his biography. Why then pour scorn on this work?
