I OBITUARY

Dom Raphael Williams, 0.S.B., monk of Ampleforth, aged 82, at Ampleforth.

Fr. Raphael was born in Caerleon, Monmouth, and educated at Ampleforth, entering the Community in 1909. He was the second of three brothers who joined the Ampleforth Community. He was ordained priest in 1917, having previously studied philosophy in Rome between 1912 and 1914.

After his return from Rome until 1953 he spent teaching at Ampleforth, both as Professor of Philosophy and as Housemaster of St. Edward's House for 20 years. He was a gifted painter of water-colours and many of his pictures hang in the rooms and corridors of Ampleforth.

On his retirement from schoolmastering, Fr. Raphael acted as chaplain to the nuns at St. Mary's Abbey, Colwich, Stafford, and at St. Seolastica's Abbey, Teignmouth. He returned to Ampleforth in 1966 and latterly suffered considerably From ill-health.

Mgr. John J. Cunningham,

Vicar General of the Hexham and Newcastle diocese since 1948, and for almost 20 years headmaster of SI. Cuthbert's Grammar School, Newcastle. aged 79. A native of Sunderland, he was educated at St. Joseph's School, Sunderland; St. Cuth bert's, Newcastle, and St. Cuthbert's College. Ushaw. After his ordination in 1924 he remained at Ushaw. where he served as professor. and rector of the seminary.

In 1949 he was named a member of the Cathedral Chapter. and in 1958 he retired from the headship of St. Cuthbert's. He then took up an appointment as Chaplain to the Good Shepherd Convent at South Gosforth. where he remained until 1962 when he became parish priest at St. Cuthbert's, Gosforth. In 1969 he went into retirement as chaplain at Clare Abbey. Darlington.
