FAMILY RESEARCH TRUST, a Catholic trust working for the advancement of the family, held the first of a series of lectures on the family in society in the Jubilee Room at the House of Commons last week.
Bishop in shades
ARCHBISHOP DEREK Worlock of Liverpool apologised to his congregation for his "sinister appearance" after he appeared at an ordination ceremony in dark glasses. He was suffering from shingles of the eyes, he explained.
A question of art
A I 5TH CENTURY PAINTING of the Immaculate Conception failed to sell at a Sotheby's auction this week after Spanish art experts challenged American claims that it was by the Spanish master Velazquez.
Sabbath selling
THE SUNDAY TRADING Bill, which allows small shops to open all day on a Sunday, and large ones between 10am and 6pm, received Royal Assent this week. The legislation was
opposed by Catholics.
Chapels to close
in Wales is to close at least a third of its 4,000 chapels and churches in the next 20 years as part of a determined reorgansation following falling congregations and rising costs.
City status
THE NEWLY-DUBBED "City" of St David's in Pembrokeshire is celebrating its new status as Britain's smallest cathedral city. The 2,000 population city joins Armagh in Northern Ireland, the seat of Irish primate Cardinal Cahal Daly, which were both this week granted city status "in recognition of their long and venerable Christian traditions".
Divorce reform
THE LORD CHANCELLOR'S long-awaited divorce reform proposals, which have the backing of Catholic marriage advice organisations, are likely to be shelved by the Government, fearful that they appear to undermine its commitment to family values. The plan calls for an end to the insistence on ascribing blame to
one partner and compulsory counselling for warring couples.
Blairs sold
BLAIRS COLLEGE, THE former national junior seminary in Scotland which closed in 1986, has finally been sold in a £4 million deal.
No £m million
SHARED INTEREST, THE ethical investment house which aims to help the Third World, has turned down a £10 million interest-free loan from George Soros, the currency speculator who made a fortune on "Black Wednesday" in 1992. "Profit should be the reward for useful service in meeting genuine human needs," said a spokesperson.
Salazar picket
SUPPORTERS OF Manuel Salazar, the 26-year-old Mexican Catholic artist who is on death row in the US, picketed the. Mexican Embassy in London this week for action on his case. Salazar was illegally abducted from Mexico in 1985 by US police after the accidental shooting of a policeman.
