Wild rumours have circulated for some time regarding the marriage of the former Austrian Chancellor, Herr van Schuschnigg.
The semi-official Vatican newspaper, Osservatore Romano, has now clarified the whole matter and refuted a statement made by Herr Buerckel, Reich Commissioner for Austria, that the ex-Chancellor had been living in concubinage with Vera Countess Fugger-Czcrnin.
The Osservatore says that Or. Schuschnigg was married to the Countess at the Dominican Church in Vienna after the ecclesiastical authorities had regularised his former matrimonial position.
The marriage was by proxy, this being entirely in order as Dr. Schuschnigg was under arrest, and believing (as he still does) that he could not be " given back to life," he wished his son, by a former marriage, to have a mother. Dr Schuschnigg's first wife was killed in a motor accident in 1935.
