difficulty experienced in learning the truth about the war owing to the " almost unbelievable power of modern propaganda." There was one voice, however, that we could trust implicitly, a voice free from all suspicion of propaganda and unwarped by national prejudice. A voice raised only in the interests of truth, the Christian voice of the Father of Christendom, the Vicar of Christ, Pius XII.
" The Holy Father tells us that the root cause of our present evils is the refusal of the world to accept a common standard of morality, the standard of Christianity.
" Our Western civilisation is rooted in its Christianity; take away that root and our civilisation is no more.
" As the cause of our present evils is the abandonment of Christianity, so can the remedy be only oneāthe restoration of that Christianitee Of no avail is victory on the field of battle, or peace settlement, of Leagues of Nations, or covenants or treaties. if Europe still remains unfaithful to its Christian faith and practice.
Christianity is Necessary
" A Christian civilisation needs its Christianity, it cannot survive without it. The Pope reiterates and insists upon this cardinal fact. The only hope of a true and lasting peace is the rechristianisation of the world, individually, socially and internationally," said Dr. Butterfield.
