CARDNAL Keith O'Brien has called for young volunteers to help the Apostleship of the Sea (AOS) after the Catholic seafarers' charity confirmed it may be forced to make some redundancies.
The AOS issued a warning last month to its chaplains and said staff cuts were possible after it overspent its budget by £350,000 in 2006.
Cardinal O'Brien said: "This is a great opportunity for the youth of Britain to turn their attention to this great charity of the Church and to explore how they can support it. I'm sure the young people of Britain whom I met with Pope Benedict XVI in Australia and those like them would accept the challenge to assist the AOS."
The Apostleship of the Sea was founded in Glasgow in 1920.
