Battle-front cathedral is blessed

Keywords:

HALF a cathedral is being blessed and reopened today, the Feast of Our Lady's Assumption, in the four times battle-stricken city of Chunchon, just south of the 38th Parallel in Korea.
The Fathers of St. Columban, who seven years ago today regained their freedom from the Japanese, had, under Mgr. Thomas Quinlan. their Prefect Apostolic, in 1950 started to build a cathedral of cut stone. But the North Korean Communists arrived. Mgr. Quinlan and five of his priests were captured and Chunchon, with its cathedral, became a heap of rubble.
After the United Nations forces had finally taken the city the Columban Fathers returned, every parish regained life, schools resumed, and the new parish priest. Fr. Hubert Hayward. and his people went to work on the cathedral, rebuilding the walls. roofing one half and erecting a temporary partition.
