Just whose side is God on in this 'just war'?
THOSE WHO declare that war with Argentina would be just, base their arguments largely on the premise that Argentina is the aggressor.
What is the Church in Argentina telling its people? Is war with Britain also just? If it is not, then why are the (Catholic) people of Argentina demonstrating support for the war?
And if it is just, then does the Catholic Church intend to decide whose side God is on? Such a possibility makes clear to me how ludicrous the whole concept of a just war is.
Miss Elaine Pyrke West Midlands I READ with certain dismay on April 30 your front page headline "Falklands force 'can be justified' " even though you are just quoting Cardinal Hume's pronouncement on the subject.
Non-violent means of resolving the conflict have not been exhausted, but the British Government is quickly resorting to "an eye for an eye" approach, opposing force with force.
This is what seems to be supported. Do we not claim to have higher moral and political standards than those of a bunch of thugs at present in government in the unfortunate Argentine?
To resort to force and put at risk human lives of both sides is morally regressive and should be clearly condemned. Greater moral and less military strength is called for.
E M Boo London N20.
SURELY the lesser of two evils is that the Falkland Islands should be given over to the Argentine people, who by their close proximity to these Islands certainly have a degree of force to their argument of sovereignty.
This is not to condone the Argentinian invasion. Surely this 'solution', coupled with the choice of resettlement with full compensation for those Islanders who wish to leave, is infinitely less evil than allowing, in the name of wounded political and national pride, the deaths of many servicemen (of both nations) and innocent Islanders in a bloody military engagement.
Which has the greater value, human life or territorial possession?
Mervin T Smith Venerabile Collegio Inglese Roma NUCLEAR power is the great force weilded by God that lies behind the very act of creation. It is intended to benefit the world and mankind. Instead we use it to manufacture weapons of destruction. Can man commit a greater blasphemy than this?
Miss Eleanor Inglefield Cornwall YOUR LEADING article on the Falklands crisis (April 30) reports "little sign of vulgar jingoism" among the British._ I see signs everywhere. Whipped up by the media, the nation appears enthusiastic to let its brave boys have a bash at the "Argies".
Isn't it time we realised that war, as a method of settling disputes, is obsolete, futile, fratricidal, eXpensive, wicked and incompatible with the teaching and example of Christ?
