Pope asked to intercede for U.S. prisoners

MR. WILLIAM ROGERS, U.S. Secretary of State, appealed to Pope Paul during a visit to the Vatican on Saturday to use his moral influence to improve conditions for American prisoners of war in North Vietnam.

U.S. officials said Mr. Rogers and the Pope also discussed the possibility of repatriating the American prisoners to a neutral country.

Mr. Rogers' visit to the Pope was the last formal engagement of his eight-nation trip.
