Sharia starts to spread

A NIGERIAN archbishop has called for a political solution to the spread of the sharia throughout his country.

Archbishop John Onaiyekan, president of the Bishops' Conference of Nige ria, said the problem was "purely political" when last month, Kano became the latest state to adopt the sharia.

Archbishop Onaiyekan said: "What do these people want to achieve? President Olusegun Obasanjo and the 36 states' governors had a meeting early this year after the Kaduna crisis and agreed to suspend the issue and to return to the status quo ante; we have not been told that that agreement has been suspended."

lie added: "I am very/ scared the way things are going. I am praying that people who have the interest of this country at heart will face reality and stop burying their heads in the sand. They must challenge those who are using the sharia to destabilise Nigeria."
