Two new bishops for England

THE POPE has appointed two new auxiliary bishops to English dioceses. it was announced this week.
Mgr Kevin O'Brien, Vicar General of the Leeds diocese, is to become Auxiliary Bishop of Middlesbrough. Fr John Rawsthorne, a team member of Liverpool's Christian Education Centre, is to be an Auxiliary Bishop of Liverpool.
Mgr O'Brien, 58, was born in Cork, Ireland, where he was educated by the Christian Brothers. He studied for the priesthood at All Hallows College, Dublin, being ordained on June 20. 1948, for the Leeds diocese. He served at St Mary's Batley, until 1951, when he transferred to St Anne's Cathedral, Leeds.
In September 1956 he joined the Catholic Missionary Society, and was appointed Superior in April 1960. As Superior, he took responsibility for the Catholic Enquiry Centre, and edited "The Belief of Catholics", a new course for non-Catholics.
In June 1971 he was appointed Vicar General of the Leeds diocese, and parish priest at St Patrick's, Huddersfield. He became a Canon of the Cathedral Chapter in 1974. Since 1979, Mgr O'Brien has been parish priest at St Francis, Bradford.
Mgr O'Brien's episcopal ordination is expected to take place in Middlesbrough Cathedral on December 8. He
will have pastoral responsibility for Humberside. including Hull, York and Scarborough.
Fr John Rawsthorne was born in Crosby. Liverpool on November 12. 1936. the eldest of a family of six. His father died in 1945. but his mother still lives in Liverpool.
Fr Rawsthorne was educated at SS Peter and Paul primary school. Crosby, St Mary's College, Crosby. and the junior seminary at St Joseph's College. Upholland. After six years study at Upholland senior seminary, he was ordained by Archbishop Heenan in 1962.
From 1962-65 he studied Natural Sciences at Cambridge Technical College, and he was Assistant Priest at St Timothy's, West Derby. from 1965-67. He then worked for eight years with the Catholic Missionary Society, and was. Director of the Catholic Enquiry Centre from 1971-75.
He then spent a further year of studies, at the Institute of Religious Education, Dundalk, Ireland, in preparation for his appointment in 1976 to the Liverpool diocese's Christian Education Centre. The centre coordinates the teaching of religion in the Catholic schools of the diocese.
Fr Rawsthorne, who also shared ecumenical team work in Liverpool, said that by his appointment the Pope was "highlighting yet again Archbishop Worlock's concern for church unity and for religious education in our archdiocese".
