Spanish Civil War

While the Government forces appear to have gained ground and to be making headway in the province of Vizcaya and even to be menacing Guipuzcoa, the Nationalist forces are already in the streets of Madrid, and the capital may be considered to be

virtually in the Nationalists' hands, The Prime Minister and the Government have left for Valencia, leaving a Committee of Defence under General Miaja and Mar garita NeIken. At the time of writing Madrid continues to be heavily shelled and bombarded and many casualties, including heavy loss of civilian life, are reported. Little activity is reported from the various other fronts, all the efforts of the nationalists being now concentrated upon the final expulsion of the Government forces from Madrid. Thousands of refugees from Madrid are pouring along towards Valencia.
