SIR,—Can modern war ever achieve good end? " Saving civilisation by course to war," seems to ,me a contract tion in terms. For one thing, it assurr that we have some civilisation to save; another, that war will not destroy wl there is. In modern warfare there is guarantee that your good objects w)1J, attained; there is every certainty that mu physical and moral harm will result. 1 do not see how it can be a Catholi duty to defend even the Church by .for of arms. He has a duty to submit to tr tore and death rather than deny his fait he has no duty. though possibly a right, inflict physical harm on his persecutors.
