In this picture, with the flag caught most strikingly by the camera, one of the recruits takes the oath in the Vatican courtyard of St. Damasus. The ceremony, which was watched by the Pope, took place on Friday, the anniversary of the date when in 1527 the Swiss Guards gave their lives in heroic defence of Pope Clement VII during the sack of Rome.
