'BEWARE THIS LEFTIST TRAP'

ROME L'OSSERVATORE ROMANO has warned Italian Catholics to beware of playing into Communist hands through attendance at leftist-oriented meetings. The warning came after one such meeting, for young people, had been opened in Florence by Mayor Giorgio La Pira, leading Catholic layman.
L'Osservatore Romano said that it is the duty of Catholics "not to offer, even in the fervour of charity, pretexts and equivocal situations for the dangerous game being played by the Communists."
Meetings such as that held at Florence. it added, aim at putting the Church and Communism on the same level and give Comrunnist newspapers propaganda material.
Red herring
It noted that Mayor I,a Pira, opening the meeting, addressed "a noble appeal" to Conununist governments "to remove the stumbling block of atheism." But it said such an appeal is not enough, and added, "For Catholickm and Communism to be compatible. Communism would have to cease being Communism."
Mayor La Pira's devout piety, on the one hand, and his efforts to find a middle way between Catholicism and Communism on the other hand, have labelled him "The little red fish in the holy water font."
The day L'Osservatore's comment appeared, he released the text of a message addressed to Mr. Khrushchev which deplored recent anti-religious articles in Pravda. The articles, he said. had been "a real shock" and given "a painful impression.'
