f the Abbey Theatre, friend and biographer of Sean O'Cascy, he was one of the illustrious company of Abbey Players who first staged O'Casey's Dublin masterpieces, 'Juno and the Paycock', 'The Plough and the Stars', and 'The Shadow of a Gunman'.
When his work as a civil. servant diverted him from acting; he became a drama critic for the Irish Monthly, the Irish Standard for 16 years, and the Dublin Press for 27 years. Over a period of 50 years, he was established as the dyyen of Irish theatre journalism.
His friendship with O'Casey,. their long walks and talks; reflected in the biography of the dramatist, and it influenced the history of the Abbey Theatre which he completed just before his death.
