Peter's, in the apse beyond the Papal Altar. The wooden chair reputed to have been used by St. Peter is enshrined in a bronze easing about 20 feet above the Pope's head as he stands at the altar. St. Bede the Venerable recorded that Cadwalla, King of the West Saxons in the seventh century, went to Rome " that he might visit Peter and St. Peter's
