EFFECTS OF MATERIALISM

" IN our day the temporal stan dards of living, but not the spiritual standards, have improved, and there are signs that the materialistic age in which we live has had its effect," stated Bishop Restieaux, of Plymouth, in his Advent pastoral letter.

"The sad lack of vocations to the priesthood is one ; and I especially deplore the present position whereby our own schools arc crying out for teachers while so many Catholics are teaching in non-Catholic schools."

Earlier, the Bishop quoted the Pope's statement that some tasks. such as contacting outsiders and those who have strayed from the Church, could often be done much better by laymen than by priests. " But the layman who wishes to help the Church, besides possessing an apostolic spirit, must also have great tact, for otherwise he may do more harm than good."
