THE PEOPLE REALLY ASSISTED AT THE CONSECRATION OF MGR. SIEDLE

Mgr. James Siedk, Vicar Apostolic of Karema, Tanganyika, was consecrated Bishop at St. Joseph's College. Beulah Hill, last Sunday. Archbishop Amigo, the consecrating prelate, was assisted by Bishop Parker and Bishop Myers.
By a Staff Reporter
In spite of the traditional splendour of the ceremonies in the chapel at St. Joseph's College, on Sunday, the consecration had a special character of intimacy. Apart from the presence of the new Bishop's relations, many White Fathers, his old teachers of St. Joseph's and members of the present generation of boys, the nature of the building and the arrangements made it a family gathering.
The absence of choir-stalls between the congregation and the sanctuary, the lack of music save for the Vein Creator and the Te Dawn and the wise provision of copies of the Order of Consecration, all helped the active participation of the laity.
PEOPLE COULD SEE
Many were thus enabled to appreciate the detailed significance of the ceremonial for the first time. The people could see clearly the " ornaments of the supreme dignity " and learn their symbolism, the Pastoral Staff (" that thou mayest be mercifully severe"), the Ring I" symbol of plighted troth "), the Mitre (" armed with the horns of either testament "), the Gloves (to cover " hands endowed with. discerning touch, as instruments of the mind, for welldoing ") With the Consecrator, the people prayed that what these ornaments prefigured " by sheen of gold, flashing of gems and cunning of varied embroidery may shine forth in his conversations and actions." The congregation really did " assist."
PASTOR OF 85,000 SOULS
The new Vicar Apostolic is 36, and is the youngest of nine children. He joined the White Fathers in 1927. After a year at the Priory he went successively to Belgium for philosophy, to Algiers for the Novitiate and to Carthage for his theological
Course.
He was ordained in 1915 and was appointed to Tangato ika Vicatiate. where he has been working for the past eleven years. The steady progress of the work of the mission has made neceysary the division of the Territory into two vicariates, Bishop Siedle's charge is that of Karema on the southern shores of Lake Tanganyika.
He will have the care of 25 White Fathers, 25 White Sisters, a similar number of African priests and nuns, and 85,000 African Catholics.
