Fr. Austin Anderson, S.D.B.. editor of the "Salesian Bulletin", died suddenly while "on supply" recently at St Mane's Southport, Lancs.
Born in Liverpool in 1898, he came to the Salesians at Battersea in 1925 as a late vocation. In the same year he entered the novitiate. then at Cowley, Oxford, and immediately after his temporary profession he left for India. where he was perpetually professed at Krishnagar in 1929. He did his philosophical and theological studies at Shillong, Assam, where he was ordained in 1932. Besides teaching in the studentate and the orphanage at Shillong, he was also manager ot the technical school and secretary to the Prefect Apostolic He was transferred to Calcutta in 1931, and remained there as managei of the Catholic Orphanage Press until 1936, when he moved to Madras as principal of two high schools, administrator of the Cathedral, and secretary to Archbishop Mathias. In 1939-40, he spent a year in England on sick leave. returning 'to Madras as parish priest of Our Lady of Lourdes, Perambur, editor of the "New Leader", and Archbishop's secretary, He also served as a .military chaplain until his demobilisation in England in 1946.
After a brief period at Bolton. he was appointed manager of the Salesian Press, Battersea, and editor of the "Salesian Bulletin" in 1947. In 1950, he moved to Beckford, where he acted as confessor at the Salesian House along with his duties as editor.
