in Brittany, the first stone of which was laid in 1952 was solemnlyopened this week. the Abbey of &widest being represented at the ceremony by Dom John Stephan, 0.S.B.
The story of this Abbey goes back to the fifth century when it was founded by St. Winwalloe, a Cornishman. who travelled in the great migration of Celtic monks and layfolk across the Channel to what became Smaller Britain or Brittany.
The Abbey was destroyed at the time of the French Revolution,
I and in 1878. the then Bishop of Quimper, unable to restore the ruins of landevennee, founded a new monastery some twenty miles away at Kerbeneet.
During the period of the French anticlerical laws, the monks found refuge in Waits at Caermaria, near Caerphilly. They returned to Kerbeneat after the first world war, and now are back in the place where St. Win:n-211°e established his Celtic monastery 10400 years ago.
