Gertrud von Le Fort, one of the most important German novelists between the first and second world wars, has died at Obcrstdorf, Bavaria, aged 95. She became a Catholic in 1926, but was the descendant of an old Savoy family which, for religious reasons, had had to settle in Geneva in the sixteenth century.
Born at Minden. Gertrud von Le Fort spent much of her early life in Rome, and soon felt attracted toward the Catholic Church. In 1928 she published her first novel, originally called "The Roman Fountain," but later "The Vale of Veronica." "The Pope from the Ghetto" was published in 1930. She also published essays on religion and philosophy, in one of which ("Woman Eternal") she meditated on the relation of the creature to his Creator as a feminine principle.
Fr. Arthur Patrick O'Connor SJ., aged '71. Born at Waterford, he was educated at St. Francis Xavier's College, Liverpool and Liverpool University. He entered the Jesuit novitiate in 1927, studied philosophy at Heythrop and was ordained in Cardiff in 1936.
