Death of Mexican Schismatic Bishop

SHOT BY ANGRY CROWDS

From Our Mexican. Correspondent The inhabitants of Portezuelo have seized and shot the " bishop," Antonio Placeres, of the schismatic Mexican Church, when he tried to take possession of the church of the town.

The police authorities were helpless before the angry masses to prevent this act of violence.

Sabotage in Russian

It was during the government of President Calles, who used to favour anything that may have helped, directly or indirectly, his plans of destruction of the Catholic Church in Mexico, that the effort to create a schism in the Mexican Church Rice Crops authorities.

Telletia Harrida

A new " wrecker " has been discovered by the Soviet authorities in the shape of a little insect which attacks rice plantations. Some time ago a specimen of this tellctia horrida was found in a parcel of rice sent by someone from abroad to a starving relative in the U.S.S.R. An order was issued that all rice from abroad should be examined at the Customs.

Lacking technical knowledge, custom officials settled the problem in a simplified way: every exporting country was in turn declared suspect as to this infection—France, Germany, Poland, and finally England. No consignment of rice sent from this country would now be passed by the Soviet customs, as apparently all the rice consumed here is infected by the beetle.

The officials do not stop to think that the rice sold in English grocery shops is subjected to sanitary examination; moreover, that this rice is unsuitable for sowing, and finally that Soviet citizens are too hungry to waste it on useless experiments in " wrecking."

was secretly encouraged by the A man named Jos6 Eduardo Davila posed as "Sovereign Pontiff" and called himself Edward I. He claimed various churches under his jurisdiction, as well as three " cardinals," five " archbishops," nine " bishops " and alai-at one hundred " canons " and " priests."

Davila established his headquarters ill Talastoc, a small town near Mexico City, where he once celebrated the " Mass r‘f the Heroes "

on the day of the anniversary of the independence of Mexico, placing on the altar the pictures of Hidalgo and of Other national heroes.

Such little importance was given by the Mexican Hierarchy to this mockery that the late Mgr. Diaz, Archbishop of Mexico, did not deem it necessary to Inform the Vatican officially. However, full documentation and photographs reached the Cardinal Secretary of State from private sources.

Davila claimed to be a priest, but it was ascertained that although he had once been a seminarist he had never been ordained.

FUTILITY OF MEXICAN PERSECUTION The Mexican population, which at first did not take seriously the farce of these impostors, began to look with hostility upon them as time went by, ending in the tragic event which has just taken place in Portezuelo, when the " bishop " tried to invade the church of the town.

Once before, a few years ago, a man who called himself " Patriarch " Perez, tried to create a National Mexican Church, but it all ended in a miserable failure.

These stupid efforts to uproot the faith of the Mexican people will always be fruitless. Even President Cardenas had to confess in a declaration he made to the Press, that the anti-religious struggle waged by the Mexican Government, closing down churches and banishing the clergy, had not attained its purposes.

The President also declared at the time that from then on the Government was to rely only on the Socialistic education. Which means that, having failed to take away the faith of the present generation with violence and drastic measures, the authorities were hoping that the children would be an easier prey.
