20,000 Workers Will Make Rome Pilgrimage of Peace

In September this year twenty thousand Young Christian Workers are making the pilgrimage to Rome. The Rev. Eugene Langdale, ecclesiastical assistant to the Y.C.W. for the Archdiocese of Westminster, and Barry Tolfree, President of the Y.C.W., have issued the following statement about this pilgrimage.
" We should be glad to avail ourselves of the hospitality of your columns to bring to the notice of the Catholic public a great event which is to take place in the month of September. Twenty thousand Young Christian Workers from more than twenty different countries are going on pilgrimage to Rome.
" The purpose of the pilgrimage is to affirm the loyalty of the young workers of the world to the Holy Father, and to intercede for peace. During the past year an intensive preparation has been made, so that this pilgrimage may truly become a unique event in the history of the Church.
"All the members have been asked to rake sacrifices-'—to give up pleasures, to offer hours of work for the intentions of the pilgrimage, to intensify their apostolic activity and bring back more of their fellow-workers to Christ, All these sacrifices are contained in a Golden Book, which has been given to the Holy Father.
"His Holiness has shown the deepest interest in the pilgrimage, and in a recent audience with the founder of the movement, Canon Cardijn, characterised it as ' A truly magnificent work for peace.' We are naturally looking forward to sending a representative body of our members, so that England may take a proper share in this great pilgrimage for peace.
" We feel sure that in these anxious times we can count on the sympathy and
support of the Catholics of England. Our members — all of them young workers—are making tremendous sacrifices to cover the heavy cost of the pilgrimage, and financial assistance would of course be welcomed.
" Any contributions, great or small, will be gratefully received by us at our headquarters, 129, Malden Road, London, N.W.5. But above all, we count on the prayers of our fellow-Catholics, that this great pilgrimage of the working youth of the world to the Centre of Christian Unity may be a pledge of the return of all the workers to Christ and of true and lasting peace,"
