Unity one year on

THE progress of inter-church relations in Britain will be reviewed later this month at the first national meeting at Swanwick in Derbyshire of "Churches Together in England" — the ecumenical forum including for the first time the Catholic church and set up last year to replace the British Council of Churches.
Cardinal Basil Hume of Westminster will speak after the gathering's first session, which will be called "where are we as churches in England?" The session will allow Christians from different churches and parts of England to review the ecumenical scene as they see il.
Those attending the meeting, which takes place next week,
have already been asked to set
down their priorities for the 19905, and in consequence four themes have been chosen for discussion — Christian unity, evangelisation in a pluralist and multi-faith society, social and political concerns, and theological issues.
Over 300 people from 20 members churches will be present at the conference. Over half have been appointed directly, with a third nominated by area inter-church bodies. The remainder represent ecumenical groupings, observers, and ten young people appointed by the English churches youth service.
The meeting will also be addressed by Dr George Carey, the Archbishop of Canterbury,
