Bishops defends role of social workers
BISHOP Hugh Lindsey of Hexham and Newcastle, strongly defended the role of social workers at the annual review of the diocesan welfare organisation Catholic Care North East last week.
"To write and _talk as if all social workers were wrong is a total travesty of, ,justice," he said. "You and I know that the majority are getting on with good solid work. Everyone makes mistakes — bishops, journalists and judges make mistakes, so we have to acknowledge that social workers will also occasionally make mistakes."
He voiced anxiety about the way in which the media often portray those involved in social work, describing it as "often inaccurate . . . it is important to encourage the excellent work done by the majority of workers", and added that it was unfortunate that many social workers "have been badly scarred by the events of recent months . . . in my opinion they do superb work in caring for children."
He particularly commended the "good, solid, and professional caring work done by Catholic Care — North East . . . it is a fine example of how to proclaim the gospel in the modern world."
*Fr Joseph Glover, secretary of the Derry diocese's Catholic Family Care Society, described the last year as "productive and successful" when he reported to its recent annual general meeting. "The amalgamation of the Derry and Down and Connor societies was indeed a major step forward which placed extra pressures on all concerned. However, I believe that these developments are already proving themselves to be worthwhile in many different ways."
