BEATLE WORSHIP

JOHN LENNON'S claim that the Beatles are "more popular than Jesus Christ" has shocked and antagonised many people all over the world. But he has said it publicly in this country long before now.

The fact is that popular feeling and public authority has for so long flattered and raved over the Beatles that arrogance of this type was bound to result. Even harder to swallow is the fact that if a world-wide opinion poll could be taken, we should probably find that John Lennon was speaking the bare truth.

Christians on the whole simply are not as interested in Christ or in their neighbour as they are in crazes like Beatlemania.

It is not the Lennon arrogance that is so shocking. It is the brutal experience of hearing it said in public that Christians are forgetting Christ. It may be that John Lennon has given Christians a well-placed kick where it was most needed.
