CARDINAL HEENAN explains in this month's ‘--4I Westminster Cathedral news sheet why little is said in the pulpit about race prejudice, divorce, abortion, Vietnam, teenage revolts and mini-skirts.
"In most large parishes the Masses follow each other more or less every hour. There are, thank God, great numbers receiving Holy Communion so that without a sermon the Mass is likely to last nearly 41) minutes.
"If a priest were to preach for 15 to 20 minutes during Mass there would be chaos every Sunday morning, Effectively, the priest has no more than five to seven minutes to address his people."
VATICAN 11 The Cardinal says that some people complain that not enough instruction has been given on the Vatican Council. "They feel that every subject should be set aside until a full course of instruction has been given on every one of the Council Decrees."
But, at a rough guess, says the Cardinal, it would take at least five years to explain the main points of the Council.
On certain political issues the Church is not at liberty to remain silent and "that is why from time to. time the bishops and priests declare the principles upon which the solution of social problems must he sought."
