A new Jesuit `assistaney for Far East

THE Society of Jesus is to establish a new "assistancy" for Indian and Eastern Asia.
This is one of the first decisions reached by the extraordinary General Congregation now meeting in Rome. An assistancy is an administrative group composed of a Dumber of provinces or vice-provinces whose problems are similar. Each has at its head a priest (the " Assistant") who resides at the Society's headquarters in Rome. The new assistancy will group together over 3,000 Jesuits of the dispersed Chinese missions, 1,984 who work in India, 182 in Japan and 201 in Indonesia. Its creation brings the total number of assistancies to nine. The eight already in existence cover Italy, Germany, France, Spain, England, America, the Slav countries and Latin-America. At present, the English assistancy is vacant.
Great Day
